Passing The Batten

There won't be too many men out there that can say they met their wife on a fence line - Mat Cave however is one man that can! Meeting his future wife, Raynae, whilst working on a fencing job - she was the daughter of the clients - it's fair to say fencing and fence lines have played a big part in Mat's life. Fencing has also played a large role in Cave family history, and the skill set required has been passed down through the generations. Now third generation Mat is holding the 'batten' and using all the knowledge and training provided to him by his grandfather, Richard (Dick), whilst running his own fencing contracting business MJ Cave Contracting Ltd in Hawke's Bay.

You don't have to spend too much time with Alf Kinzett, driving around his deer farm, to get a feel for the passion and pride he has in the operation he and his family have developed from small beginnings in Murchison. As you move from paddock to paddock, you can sense the excitement in his voice as he surveys his stock and explains the steps taken over many years which have led to the development of the magnificent looking deer which are cautiously staring back at us.

On the day we visited Glenn Blackmore and the team from Blackmore Fencing, they were starting on a job they weren't too comfortable with — pulling down fence lines on a vineyard. Jobs like this are a rare occurrence for fencing contractors who are more in the constructing than deconstructing game, but Glenn just adds this latest job to his long list of fencing experiences which includes building fences not only where he is based in Marlborough but also in America and Europe.

Heavy rain coupled with a biting wind are less than ideal conditions when you are in the middle of the busiest time of year, harvesting the crop you have nurtured for the past six months. "We can't do much about it, these hops need to be harvested now so we just need to get on with it." Brent explained this to us as another trailer load of hops headed off past to be processed...

Dave McEwen is not a man to sit back and put his feet up. He's a man who thrives on challenges and testing his own limits and the limits of the land he is working. Where he is today can be attributed to not just his years of hard work but also the path his father laid for him.

When he received a panicked call from one of his workers asking him to come down to the orchard straight away, Graeme Hodges didn't know what he was going to find — a full row of apple trees lying on the ground wasn't one of the potential scenarios he had considered whilst rushing to the scene. In all his time in the pipfruit industry, spent on or around orchards, he had never seen a full row collapse to the ground. He is now making changes to ensure it's not something he'll see again.

Golden Bay is often described as a vast paradise, a place of unspoilt beauty. A popular tourist destination due to its good weather and relaxed, friendly lifestyle, it's also the work place of Dave Jacobsen, fencing contractor, who spends his days constructing fence lines all over the Golden Bay region.
