The Goldpine Post – JULY 2022

Welcome to the July edition of The Goldpine Post. This month we look at the New Zealand viticulture sector, showcasing three vineyards based in Marlborough and Martinborough.

We visited Dave Shepherd, vineyard manager and viticulturalist of Foley Wines based in Martinborough. He showed us around Martinborough Vineyard (which also features Lighthouse Gin) and Te Kairanga – both presenting a strong focus on sustainability.

Glenn Blackmore of Blackmore Fencing in Marlborough shares a tip on how to install an exclusion fence.

Hamish Dodson, manager of Sandhill Estate Vineyards, showed us around his 70-hectare farm and vineyard based in Spring Creek. His family has owned the property for six generations, producing Sauvignon Blanc grapes for Yealands and Marlborough Grape Growers Co-operative.

Not far from Sandhill Estate Vineyards, you will find Whare Hill Vineyard in Renwick. Managed by Bryce McIntyre, his ethos is about creating a strong work-life balance: recharging and spending time with the family when he clocks off at the end of the day.

Founded in Gisborne, Surfing for Farmers is a mental health initiative giving free surf coaching and lessons to members of the rural community. Their aim is to encourage farmers to take time away from their busy workload and spend time out in the water.

Our State of the Industry article for the month focuses on viticulture. We spoke with four individuals within the New Zealand viticulture sector on how the industry is progressing.
