The Goldpine Post – JANUARY 2022
This month’s issue of The Goldpine Post focuses on the apple industry – the second largest fruit export and the highest apple productivity in the world. We visit Waimea Nurseries located just outside of Nelson where we spoke with Bruno Simpson about their third-generation family business and New Zealand’s largest fruit tree provider.
Our two other profiles are in Hawke’s Bay: The Apple Press and Taylor Apples. Ross Beaton and Sally Gallagher are the founders of The Apple Press. They talk about using “ugly apples” to manage waste and provide a diverse range of the best tasting apple juices. We spoke with father-son duo, Kelvin and Cameron Taylor of Taylor Apples, which has been in their family for over 100 years, on how they’re implementing more robotics within their business.
For our fencing tip this month, Mat Cave of MJ Cave Contracting shows us how to install a rural farm gate. We also take a look at our Heat Fixation process and the importance of a properly fixed fencepost.
Our State of the Industry piece for the month is on apples. We look at statistics across the industry and talk to people within the sector to get an all-round perspective.
All this and more inside.
