Trent Anderson - How to Join Sheep Netting: Anderson Fencing & Earthworks

Introducing Trent Anderson: From Otago and Southland to as far north as South Canterbury, Anderson Fencing and Earthworks has built a reputation for delivering sharp, reliable results.

Led by owner Trent Anderson, who has been fencing for over a decade, the business has grown steadily over the past six and a half years - even after launching just three months before COVID hit.

Anderson Fencing and Earthworks consists of a team of about 15, and handles everything from rural fence lines to residential builds, retaining walls, and is about to start work on a 50-kilometre rural fencing contract.

The strength of Anderson Fencing and Earthworks is their ability to adapt while still keeping quality at the centre. “We were really heavy in rural at the start,” Trent said. “COVID slowed that up, so we looked after the locals and focused on smaller jobs. Now the bigger contracts are rolling back in, and we’re picking the rural up again.”

Trent’s experience in tough terrain shaped the business. “I spent a lot of time in Middlemarch – the holy grail of fencing, in my opinion. It’s all drilling into rock every day; everything’s hard up there. Summers are hot, winters are freezing cold, but it was just awesome. I really, really enjoyed it. I wanted to do it for myself.”

Trent is big on tidy workmanship, and his tip on how to join netting without a crimp is an example of that. “It uses up leftover lengths and it looks a lot better than a big crimped gap. It’s also strong. We can strain it up as hard as we want, and it doesn’t move.”

Anderson Fencing and Earthworks also offers full earthworks capability, making them a one-stop solution for clients wanting fencing, ground shaping, or retaining completed by the same crew.

What Trent is most proud of, though, is the team he’s built. “Our staff and the characters that you have come through the business are pretty awesome. Like right now, I’ve got a young guy that I’ve fi nally cut loose, and he’s running the post driver. I’ll go and check in on him later on today, but I know that he’s got things handled. There are less young guys actually wanting to get into it, so it’s important to try and encourage these guys and have them make a career out of it.”

Anderson Fencing and Earthworks continues to stand out as a business you can trust to get the job done - and done properly.
