Hamish Mcdonald - Contour Tie-Off with Netting: Down South Fencing - Southland
For Hamish McDonald, fencing isn’t just a job - it’s something he’s spent nearly a decade refining into a craft. As the driving force behind Down South Fencing, Hamish brings eight to nine years of hands-on experience to every project, delivering work that’s built to last and done right the first time.
Currently working on a 5km sheep netting job with hot wire integration and a full dairy conversion to follow, Hamish is no stranger to large-scale, demanding rural projects. From sheep and deer netting to eight- and nine-wire systems, two-wire dairy fencing, and even residential work, Down South Fencing covers a wide range of fencing solutions across Southland, including northern, western, and central regions.
What sets Hamish apart is his attention to detail and commitment to doing things properly. Take his contoured tie-off method, which he demonstrates in this month’s fencing tip. It is a technique that ensures even wire tension across the entire fence line. It’s a small detail that many overlook, but one that makes a big difference. Without it, fences can strain unevenly, leaving sections loose or overly tight. With Hamish’s approach, everything pulls up clean, consistent, and built for longterm performance.
Working alongside his team member Jamie, who’s been with him for the past year, Hamish has built a reputation for quality workmanship and reliability, which has led to consistent clients across the region.
After a stint in dairy farming, Hamish returned to fencing around ten years ago to pursue what he genuinely enjoys, and it shows in the pride he takes in every job.
Down South Fencing isn’t about cutting corners. It’s about solid materials, proven techniques, and fences that stand the test of time.
