Hainsley Mills- Building Fences That Last : Mills Fencing - Taranaki

Just east of Stratford in Taranaki, Hainsley Mills - better known as “Millsy”- is doing what he loves most: building fences designed to stand the test of time.

As the owner of Mills Fencing, Millsy leads a team of fi ve full-time staff and a regular subcontractor, delivering a wide range of fencing solutions across the region. From residential fencing and retaining walls to stockyards, deer fencing, and large-scale rural projects, the team has built a reputation for quality workmanship and reliability.

Millsy’s fencing journey began in 2008 while working on a farm, and what started as a temporary job quickly became a passion. After learning the trade and gaining experience, he eventually went out on his own with little more than a shovel and a post-hole borer. For several years, he completed every job by hand before investing in machinery and growing the business into what it is today.

Millsy balances running a successful fencing company with managing a 300-hectare sheep, beef, and dairy grazing farm alongside his family. Despite the demands of business ownership, he still enjoys working alongside his crews and mentoring younger team members entering the industry.

Mills Fencing now works throughout Taranaki and has been involved in several significant projects, including farm conversions, wind farm developments, and upgrades to local show grounds. However, Millsy says the foundation of the business is to provide farmers with honest, high-quality fencing at a fair price.

“We want to leave a job knowing it’s built right,” he said. “The goal is for the customer never to have to call us back because something has failed.” This reflects the practical problem-solving and attention to detail that have become hallmarks of Mills Fencing’s work across Taranaki.
