Craig Smith: Inserting a Foot Without Leaving a Hole

Arrowline Fencing Ltd.

Craig Smith has been the owner and operator of Arrowline Fencing for 22 years, bringing a wealth of experience to the industry.

We caught up with him as he worked on a lifestyle block in Matahiwi, Masterton, constructing a driveway and a paling fence around a tiny home. His work covers a wide range of projects, from conventional electrics to bespoke fencing solutions, focusing primarily on rural, lifestyle, and equine fencing. With a loyal client base, Craig’s services are in high demand throughout the Wairarapa region.

Raised on a farm in the Tararua Ranges before relocating to Waikato, Craig is well-acquainted with the diverse terrains of the North Island. After learning a trade in small motor mechanics, Craig spent some time in Australia before returning to New Zealand to work on land development in Te Kūiti. Eventually, he transitioned to full-time fencing along the East Coast. When asked how he got into fencing full-time, he laughed, crediting his father: “The contractor down the road needed a worker, and my father told me I was leaving to go fencing.”

Craig’s business primarily serves the Wairarapa region, but noted, “We will travel, although there’s plenty to do here.” With experience across a range of fencing types, his favourite is the eight-wire, two-hot setup, which he appreciates for its simplicity and efficiency. “Plain wire’s a solid choice – nice and quick. You can be in and out without cutting corners, so you know the job’s done right,” he explained.

In his limited spare time, Craig enjoys two-wheel trail biking, often sharing these adventures with his family. Despite a busy work and family life, he takes pride in delivering high-quality results and working alongside his son. His dedication has earned him a reputation as a reliable fencer in the Wairarapa, known for delivering robust, practical solutions tailored to clients’ needs.
