Aaron Third: Assembling Double Sided Outriggers
Aaron Third Contracting
Aaron Third of Aaron Third Contracting has been transforming the landscape of rural fencing for nearly seven years.
Based in Santoft, on the west coast of Bulls, Aaron specialises in conventional and electric fencing, and serves a vast area: from Waikanae to Whanganui and towards the East Coast.
Originally from Bulls, Aaron left the region for sunny Hawke’s Bay, then spent time overseas in Australia and the UK, engaging in various agricultural tasks like driving tractors and managing sheep and beef farms. However, it was the sale of the farm he managed at the time that inadvertently steered him towards a full-time fencing career. “I thought I’d take a year off and live at my beach house and try to do as little as possible, but I went stir-crazy after just three weeks,” Aaron recounted with a laugh. What began as a bit of weekend cash work with a spade and rammer quickly evolved into a thriving business, complete with tractors, post drivers, and now several subcontractors.
Despite the growth of his business, Aaron remains hands-on and passionate about his work. He primarily works on conventional fencing (his preferred type) and electric fencing, occasionally taking on deer fencing projects. Aaron’s work takes him through various terrains and soil types, adding variety to his projects. One of the most memorable projects he’s tackled was fencing up the Reikorangi River in the Akatarawa Ranges. “It’s extremely steep and the ground is solid rock. It takes a lot of effort with the post driver just to get a post in the ground,” he explains. The challenging conditions often require crossing the river, with the risk of getting stranded if it rains. Despite these difficulties, the client’s appreciation of Aaron’s work keeps him returning to such tough jobs.
Looking to the future, Aaron is keen to see more young people entering the fencing industry. “Just like a lot of outdoor manual labour jobs in New Zealand, we’re short on young staff. It’s a great industry, but it requires a certain level of fitness before you start. A lot of young guys turn up and quit after a few weeks because it’s so physically demanding. Getting fit first makes a big difference,” he advised.
Aaron’s enjoyment of fencing extends beyond the physical work. He values the relationships he builds with his clients and the satisfaction of seeing a job well done. Outside of work, Aaron unwinds by hunting, fishing, diving, and participating in the local Bulls rugby club, where he serves as Club Captain.
