When it comes to fencing Canterbury’s steep hill country, Two Boys Fencing has carved out a reputation for taking on the jobs others would rather avoid.

Owned and operated by Matt Latham, the business has been serving the region for six years, although Matt’s connection to fencing stretches much further back.

“I’ve done it on and off my whole life,” he says. “Whenever I needed to make money, I’d go fencing.”

Growing up in rural New Zealand and spending much of his working life farming, driving tractors and contracting, Matt has always been involved in the agricultural sector. Today, he leads a team that specialises in fencing some of the most challenging landscapes around Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills

The company covers an area stretching from Little River to Port Levy, throughout Lyttelton Harbour and across the surrounding hill country. While Matt doesn’t necessarily describe the business as a specialist in hill fencing, the terrain has become a defining feature of their work.

“It’s more that no one else seems to want to do it,” he laughs. “We’re happy to do it.”

Current projects include completing slip-repair fencing following storm damage earlier this year, as well as installing new fencing for lifestyle properties. The team predominantly constructs netting fences using high-tensile wire and stock netting, as well as batten fences, deer fencing, and retaining walls.

For Matt, quality workmanship comes from a combination of traditional techniques and continuous learning. “It’s a combination of what I was originally taught, then watching other people and picking up ideas along the way,” he says. “I like things being done right.”

While quality fencing remains the goal, Matt says the people behind the work are just as important. “It’s a hard job,” he says. “The most important thing is that the team enjoys it, stays safe, and we have good banter.”
