The Post June 2026

From the rolling hill country of Marlborough to the rugged southern coastline of Southland, this issue takes a closer look at the people, properties and practical ideas shaping New Zealand’s beef and grazing sector.

We begin with an overview of the current beef and grazing landscape, exploring the challenges and opportunities facing farmers across the country.

Next, we visit Taimate Angus, where Paul Hickman, his family, and the team behind the Angus bull stud share their focus on breeding functional cattle that are not only suited to New Zealand conditions but can hold their own globally.

This month’s fencing tip comes from Hamish McDonald of Down South Fencing, who explains a contoured tie-off with GOFENCE® ENDURANCE® sheep netting - a practical technique designed to improve fence strength and durability on uneven or hilly terrain.

We then head south to meet Jacqui Chamberlain, fourth-generation farmer at West Range Station, a beef-finishing operation where pasture management, effi ciency, innovation and long-term planning all play a key role in the business.

We also travel to the southern coast near Invercargill to meet Gerald MacRae, the proud owner of a Ned’s Sheds Buller, showcasing a build designed to handle the harsh coastal environment while supporting the demands of a busy rural operation.

Lastly, a new initiative in Hawke’s Bay is seeing the community enjoy their local rural landscapes, stretch their legs, and savour good food. Physio Jen Mackie, alongside talented chef and friend Kate de Lautour, has started Muster NZ – a trail run finished off with a 5-star three-course meal.

Finally, this month’s State of the Industry provides a snapshot of New Zealand’s beef sector, with insights into where the industry is heading.
