The Post July 2025

We’re devoting our July edition of The Post to all things deer. Join us as we explore large-scale operations, learn about cutting-edge velvet genetics, and meet with the passionate farmers driving the industry forward.

We begin at Mt Hutt Station, where Bruce Hood runs one of New Zealand’s largest red deer herds across 7,000 acres of Canterbury high country. With a low-input, extensive breeding model, the station’s focus is on scale, self-sufficiency, and long-term performance.

In Southland, we visit Altrive Red Deer, where Andrew and Samantha Elder are leading the charge in velvet breeding. With a mix of traditional record-keeping and modern science – including artificial insemination and embryo transfer – they’re building a stud with strong genetics, sustainability, and legacy at its core.

Back in Canterbury, fencer Tom Rathgen shares a practical tip: installing a tie-back, a technique that’s efficient, cost-saving, and strong. With nearly a decade on the job and working towards a Level 4 Fencing Certificate in business management at Northtec, Tom is all about doing the job right and inspiring the next generation.

We also visit Fieldays at Mystery Creek, the southern hemisphere’s largest agricultural trade event. Here, we catch the action at the Golden Pliers and Silver Spades Fencing Competition, where Tom is competing alongside other strong fencers from across the country and beyond.

This month’s State of the Industry provides a current snapshot of New Zealand’s deer sector, with insights from key leaders and contributors helping shape where it’s headed.

Turn the page and meet the individuals redefining what it means to farm deer in Aotearoa.

We intend to continue supplying you with the best stories, activities and techniques in agriculture. If you have anything that you would like us to share, please get in touch.
