The Post November 2024

Welcome to the November edition of The Post. This month, we focus on the deer industry, starting with a deep dive into Melior, a forward-thinking deer farming business in the Mackenzie District. With a strong emphasis on genetic improvement, Melior leads the way in producing high-quality venison and velvet, while navigating the unique challenges and opportunities of this demanding landscape.

In the rolling farmlands of Geraldine, we visited fencing expert Toby How at his property, where he shared hands-on advice for installing a hot wire on a deer fence.

At the southern tip of the North Island, we travelled to Wharerata Farm in Pirinoa, Wairarapa. Owner and farmer, Sophie Atkinson combines traditional farming knowledge, gained from her family’s legacy, with fresh perspectives on farm management alongside her partner, Tim. Their commitment to sustainability and innovation are truly noteworthy, and provide valuable insight into how rural businesses can successfully operate in the modern era.

Prior to the 2024 Gumboot Friday event, we spoke with Mike King, founder of I Am Hope, about his organisation’s ongoing efforts to support mental health in rural New Zealand. The need for awareness and action, he emphasised, remains crucial beyond the event. Discover how you can continue to make a difference and support those facing mental health challenges in our rural communities.

This month’s State of the Industry article focuses on the deer sector, featuring insights from key leaders within this incredible industry.

We intend to continue supplying you with the best stories, activities and techniques in agriculture. If you have anything that you would like us to share, please get in touch.
